Ceramic, Porcelain, and China Cups & Mugs

I’m not talking about the cheap souvenir mugs, tacky specialty advertising mugs and swag.

I mean truly lovely cups & mugs: high quality, beautifully designed with raised floral motifs, sculpted vine and leaf handles and such. They often come with matching saucers and spoons.

Break out the winter hospitality in style with hot chocolate, spiced cider, and warm spiced cranberry apple juice.

Pitchers & Carafes

Pitchers and carafes are versatile pieces, perfect for serving water, juice, or wine. They often serve as both functional and decorative elements on the dining table.

Made from materials like glass, porcelain, or ceramic, these vessels come in various sizes and shapes to suit different occasions.

Water Glasses

Water glasses are essential for any dining setup. Typically larger than juice glasses, they are designed to hold ample amounts of water or other non-alcoholic beverages. Size can range from 8 ounces to 10, 12, or 16 ounces. Water glasses are made from sturdy materials like glass or crystal, they are often simple in design yet elegant.

Beverage Glasses

Beverage glasses, on the other hand, are more versatile, suitable for a range of drinks from soda to iced tea. Their design can vary significantly, allowing for a mix of creativity and functionality. Size is ample ranging from 8 to 12 up to 16 ounces.

Tumblers

Tumblers are the most versatile type of glassware, perfect for both casual and formal settings. They can be used for any cold beverage and are usually made from sturdy glass or crystal. They come in a variety of sizes ranging from 8-16 ounces.

Choosing the Right Material

Glass vs. Crystal

Glass and crystal are the most common materials for drinkware, each offering unique benefits. Glass is durable and affordable, making it ideal for everyday use. Crystal, with its higher lead content, offers a more refined aesthetic with its clarity and brilliance, perfect for formal occasions.

Metal Drinkware

When it comes to metal drinkware, stainless steel and pewter are safe choices for alcoholic beverages. They are durable and can provide excellent insulation, keeping drinks at the desired temperature.

Note on  Pewter

Modern pewter is generally not toxic when mixed with alcohol, but antique or older pewter can be dangerous due to lead content. While modern, lead-free pewter is safe for beer and spirits, it is recommended to avoid storing highly acidic alcoholic drinks (like wine) in any pewter container for more than 24 hours

Note on Copper

Copper can be leached by alcohol so while one drink will not harm, it is best to avoid leaving alcoholic beverages in it for long. Also the alcohol is harsh on the copper and will tarnish it quickly. For these reasons it is best to avoid mugs made of copper or rose gold plating.

Thick vs. Thin Glass

The choice between thick and thin glass depends on the type of drink. Thick glass is ideal for drinks served cold, as it provides better insulation, while thin glass is preferred for wine glasses, as it allows for a more delicate feel and better appreciation of the drink’s nuances.
