Healthy Kitchen: Food Storage-Replace Plastic with Glass Food Storage Containers

In today's world, where health consciousness is on the rise, the importance of food storage solutions cannot be overstated. The kitchen is the heart of healthy living, and what we use to store our food plays a significant role in maintaining its quality and safety. A growing body of evidence suggests that replacing plastic food storage containers with glass is a crucial step in promoting a healthier lifestyle. Here's why it matters.

The Need for Healthier Food Storage Containers

The materials we choose for food storage can have lasting impacts on our health and the environment. Plastics, commonly used for food storage, often contain harmful chemicals that can leach into food. These include substances like Bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates, which are known to disrupt hormones and potentially lead to health issues. Therefore, choosing healthier, non-toxic materials for food storage is essential for reducing exposure to these harmful substances.

Problems with Plastic Food Storage

Chemical Leaching

One of the biggest concerns with plastic food storage containers is the risk of chemical leaching. When plastics are exposed acidic foods, or to heat, as  in microwaves or dishwashers, they can release toxins into the food. This is particularly concerning.

Health Concerns

Plastic food containers pose significant health risks by leaching toxic chemicals—principally bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, and PFAS—into food, especially when heated, scratched, or aged.

These chemicals are endocrine disruptors that interfere with hormones, potentially leading to infertility, cancer, obesity, diabetes, and neurodevelopmental issues.

Environmental Impact

Plastics are notorious for their negative impact on the environment. They are not biodegradable and can take hundreds of years to decompose. This contributes significantly to pollution and poses a threat to wildlife.

Durability Issues

Over time, plastic containers can warp, scratch, and retain odors, which can compromise the quality of the stored food. Certain foods, like tomato based sauces and stews forever stain the plastic and infiltrate the texture. Oily foods a hard to clean and can leave an unclean, germ attracting residue. Further, these flaws diminish not only their usefulness, but their aesthetic appeal. No one feels appetized to eat leftovers that are in unappealing, stained, oily, or dirty looking containers.

Why People Do Not Use Glass Storage - What Are Their Concerns?

Despite the benefits of glass, some people hesitate to make the switch due to various concerns.

Problem: Glass Can Break

One major concern is that glass can break if dropped. Plastic does not break when dropped, but it does crack, tear, and degrade.

Solution: Tempered Glass or Borosilicate Glass.

Use only tempered or borosilicate glass. They are very durable, breaking, and to heat.

Problem: Weight

Glass containers can be heavier and less convenient to transport, around the kitchen or outside of the home.

Solution:

Given the size of food storage containers, although they will feel different, the weight really is not a problem. Also when you store them at counterheight or where you can easily reach them, it is so easy to use, you won’t even think about it.

Invest in a quilted wares storage bag or carrier with a handle for taking them outside of the house. It makes it so much easier to transport and looks nice too.

Problem: Storage Space and Ease

Glass storage containers do not stack as tightly as plastic, so people hesitate to make the switch to glass.

Solution: Store Strategically

Glass is actually just as easy to store as plastic. To make it work for you and easy to handle, store the containers where you use them, and store them at or close to arm height where you don’t have to really reach for them.

I like storing larger glass storage containers on pull-out shelves in a lower cabinet under the prep counter. Smaller glass storage containers I place in a shallow drawer just under the prep counter which is where I use them.

You can stack the containers one inside the other with the lids in a plastic bin beside them. Another way to do it is to keep the lids on them and stack them one on top of the other.

Problem: Higher Cost than Plastic

The initial cost can also be a deterrent, as good quality glass containers tend to be more expensive upfront compared to their plastic counterparts.

Solution: Cost-Benefit Analysis

Keep in mind, though, that they outlast plastic, can be used for more types of food, can be used in the microwave and dishwasher, and do not stain or hold odors like plastic.  On the whole, you get more for your money and your purchase lasts longer.

Why Glass is a Better Alternative

Non-Toxic Material

Glass is an inert material, meaning it doesn't react with the food stored in it. This eliminates the risk of chemical leaching and ensures that your food remains safe and uncontaminated.

Superior Food Preservation

Glass containers provide a more airtight seal than plastic, which helps preserve the freshness of food for longer periods. This is particularly beneficial for leftovers and prepared raw foods, maintaining their taste and nutritional value.

Plastic taints the taste of foods a bit, while plastic keeps foods tasting like they should. It is like the difference in a cola or soda bottled in plastic vs one bottled in glass.

Sustainability

Glass is 100% recyclable and can be reused indefinitely without losing quality. By choosing glass, you're making an eco-friendly choice that reduces waste and promotes sustainability.

Durability

Unlike plastic, glass does not degrade over time. It is resistant to stains and odors, making it ideal for storing a wide variety of foods. Glass does not release harmful chemicals even when heated.

Versatility

Glass containers are also versatile, as they can safely be used in the oven, microwave, freezer, dishwasher, to prep food, to serve food on the table, or to eat from.

The Gift the Lasts

When choosing a gift for a newlywed, a housewarming, or a new graduate moving out of the home consider glass storage containers. They are one of the most useful gifts. Everyone needs them. You cannot have too many. They will last forever.

Making the Switch to Glass Storage

Switching to glass food storage containers is a simple yet impactful change that can enhance your kitchen's health and sustainability. Here are a few tips to ease the transition:

Start Small

Begin by replacing a few frequently used plastic containers with glass alternatives. This allows you to gradually adjust to the change without feeling overwhelmed.

Buy Sets

These items are sold individually and in sets. You can get a better price per unit and get a few essentials at a time by buying sets. You can get a set of various sizes, or a set of the same size.

Choose Diverse Sizes

Invest in an assortment of glass containers in various sizes to accommodate different food storage needs, from small snacks to large meal preps. Buy a set of various sizes to make this easy.

Proper Care

While glass is durable, it is still breakable. Handle with care and avoid sudden temperature shifts to prevent cracks or breaks. I use my glass containers in the oven, microwave, freezer, and dishwasher. I just would not go from one to the other immediately.

Glass for the Long Run

By making this shift to glass, you're not only prioritizing your health but also contributing to a cleaner planet. Embrace the benefits of glass food storage containers and transform your kitchen into a healthier, more sustainable space.
