Kitchen Storage: How to Store Kitchen Countertop Appliances

Kitchen Storage: How to Store Kitchen Countertop Appliances

Managing kitchen storage can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when it comes to countertop appliances. You want your coffee maker, electric kettle, toaster, juicer, mixer, blender out where you can use them. The problem is they  can quickly clutter countertops, making your kitchen feel chaotic and disorganized.

In this blog post, we'll explore the common dilemmas associated with countertop appliances and provide practical solutions for organizing and storing them effectively.

To Store or Not to Store?

Leaving Appliances Out

Leaving appliances out on the countertops is  a convenient choice for many. It saves time and effort, especially for frequently used items like toasters and coffee makers. Keeping appliances out on the countertops also leaves hidden storage areas free for other items.

Nevertheless, having too many appliances on display can lead to a cluttered appearance, making your kitchen feel smaller and less inviting. Additionally, it limits your workspace, which can be frustrating during meal preparation.

Storing Appliances Away

On the other hand, storing appliances away can help maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment. The primary challenges with this approach include finding appropriate storage space and ensuring easy access to appliances when needed. Storing appliances in cabinets or pantries often requires thoughtful organization to prevent the hassle of constantly rearranging items to retrieve what you need.

Storage Strategies: Size, Frequency, and Type of Use

Finding the best way to store your countertop appliances involves considering several factors: size, frequency of use, and type of use. Let's explore how each of these can influence your storage decisions.

Storing Kitchen Countertop Appliances By Size

Storing appliances by size can be an efficient way to maximize space. For instance, smaller appliances like hand mixers and electric can openers can be easily tucked away in drawers or on lower shelves, while larger items like stand mixers or food processors may require more substantial storage solutions, such as dedicated cabinet space or pantry shelves.

Storing Kitchen Countertop Appliances by Frequency of Use

Prioritizing appliances based on how often you use them can streamline your kitchen routine. Frequently used items should be easily accessible, perhaps on a dedicated section of your countertop, in an appliance garage,  or on open shelving.

Less frequently used appliances can be stored in less accessible areas, such as deep cabinets or storage cabinet shelves.

Storing Kitchen Countertop Appliances by Type of Use

Organizing appliances by their function can also be beneficial. Grouping together appliances used for similar tasks—such as baking, grilling, cooking, beverages, or frozen desserts—can make meal preparation more efficient.

For example, keep your blender and juicer  in a "beverage zone". This can simplify your morning routine. Keep baking appliances near your bakeware so everything's in one place.

Best Practices for Organizing and Storing Appliances

To achieve a perfectly organized kitchen, consider implementing the following best practices:

1. Declutter Regularly: Periodically review your appliances and donate or dispose of those you no longer use. This creates more space and simplifies organization.

2. Use Shelving and Racks: Install adjustable shelving or racks inside cabinets to maximize vertical space. This can help accommodate appliances of varying sizes and make retrieval easier.

3. Divide and Conquer: Use shelf dividers to separate appliances. This looks neater and we can identify and retrieve appliances easier and faster.

4. Use Trays & Bins: Depending on the appliance and its size and weight, you may want to put it on a tray or in a bin along with its accessories. For mid-size appliances, I place them on a sturdy cookie sheet or large rectangular pan to create a portable tray.

For some larger appliances I use household storage bins or baskets. These have handles and it makes it easier to move the appliances. Otherwise, store the accessories in a bin beside the appliance.

5. Incorporate Pull-Out Drawers: Consider installing pull-out drawers in cabinets to improve accessibility. These are especially useful for heavy or bulky appliances.

6. Label Storage Areas: Clearly label sections of your shelves in cabinets. This not only helps you locate appliances quickly but also encourages everyone in the household to return items to their designated spots.

7. Utilize Appliance Garages: Appliance garages—enclosed sections on countertops with roll-up doors—can hide appliances while keeping them within easy reach.

8. Use Freestanding Storage  for Appliances: These are great for extra storage space and they can keep your appliances at hand, but out of the way until you are ready for them. Consider an island or cart with wheels or a freestanding rack. I’ve used these in my kitchen and loved them. It gives you plenty of sturdy shelving space for all those appliances.
